Why does my website get traffic but no phone calls?

Traffic without calls almost always means one of three things: the visitors are not local buyers, the page is too slow to survive the wait, or there is no obvious way to reach you above the fold. Check them in that order. Two of the three are measurable in an afternoon, and the third is usually visible on a phone in ten seconds.

01section 01

Check whether the traffic is even the right traffic

Open Search Console, set the date range to the last 90 days, and sort your queries by impressions. If the terms bringing people in are informational rather than transactional, the traffic is doing exactly what it was built to do, and none of it was ever going to call.

A tree service ranking for what does tree removal cost gets readers. The same company ranking for emergency tree removal near me gets calls. Both are useful. Only one pays this month.

02section 02

Check how the page behaves on a phone, not a desktop

Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and read the mobile tab only. The desktop score flatters almost every site and predicts almost nothing about lead volume.

The number that matters is Largest Contentful Paint. Google calls anything under 2.5 seconds good, but that threshold marks where ranking penalties stop, not where visitors stop leaving. On a mid-range phone over a normal cellular connection, a page that takes four seconds to show its headline has already lost a meaningful share of the people who asked for it.

03section 03

Check how many taps stand between arriving and dialing

On a phone, the number should be one. A tappable phone number in the header, and a second one at the point where the visitor has finished reading what you do.

The common failures are dull and easy to fix: a phone number rendered as an image, a number that is not a tel link, a contact form with nine fields where four would do, or a header that collapses the number into a hamburger menu on the exact device most likely to call.

04section 04

What to do when all three check out

Then the problem is upstream of the website. Track it. Call tracking on the site number, and a look at what happens to the calls that do come in.

A site can only be held responsible for the call being placed. If calls ring out during business hours, or go to a voicemail box that nobody clears, no amount of front-end work will show up as revenue.
