03the arithmetic
what one job is worth
- one new roof
- $12,000
- one new case
- $25,000
- one new contract
- $40,000
The arithmetic is not subtle. One job the site would not otherwise have produced covers the retainer for a quarter or more, depending on the trade. That is the entire investment case, and it either holds for your numbers or it does not.
04the phase-out
Your site was built for 2015. Your buyers search in 2026.
The site you have was built to be looked at. It was signed off on a desktop monitor, in a meeting, by people who were already your customers. It has never been tested by the only audience that matters now: someone holding a phone, three seconds of patience, and a problem you can solve.
What changed is not taste. It is the machinery underneath. Search results are assembled rather than listed, answers get quoted before links get clicked, and the map pack decides who gets called before anyone reaches a website at all. A site that cannot be read, parsed, and cited by that machinery is not dated. It is invisible.
So we stopped treating design as the deliverable. Structure, speed, schema, and the answers themselves are the deliverable. The drawing is how we prove the structure holds.
Calls don’t happen by accident — they’re engineered.
