Your time commitment during a build, by phase

How involved do I need to be in my website build?

Four to six hours total across a 30–45 day build, and it is front-loaded on week one, handing over access and agreeing the page list. The thing that cannot be delegated is copy approval, and in our experience it is the usual reason a build runs late.

By phase

Week one: two to three hours, for access, the service list and prices, and the page list decision. Weeks two to three: one to two hours, to approve copy and supply facts we got wrong. Week four: under an hour, to review staged pages. Launch, day 30 to 45: under an hour, to confirm go-live and confirm the phone number. After launch: monthly, to read the report and say what changed in the business.

Week one is two to three hours because the credentials are in it. They are mostly lookups, and they take an afternoon if you do them in one sitting and three weeks if you do them one email at a time.

The one thing that cannot be delegated

Copy approval. Not writing it — approving it. An agency can write a service page that is accurate, well-sourced and still wrong about how your business actually works, and you are the only person who can see that. Twenty minutes per page, once.

Three ways owners accidentally make a build take twice as long. Two approvers with no tiebreak: name one person who decides. Approving in batches of one: review the set, not each page as it lands. And scope added at approval — four more pages is four more pages, at the same rate, and it still takes the time.

What you should not have to do: chase the agency for status, learn any part of the stack, or make a technical decision you were not given the context for. If a build needs more than six hours of your time, something has been handed to you that was not yours.
