built to rank

Wix and SEO: what the platform limits and what it doesn't

Is Wix bad for SEO or is that a myth?

A myth, with a real residue. There is no builder field in any ranking system, and Wix exposes the controls that matter — it lets you edit robots.txt directly, which is the capability people assume a hosted builder withholds. What it does limit is the performance ceiling and how much of the page you can change.

What is not true

Wix is not a ranking penalty. No documented ranking system takes the builder as an input, and Google's guidance for every site is the same: be crawlable, be indexable, be useful. Nothing in the documentation stops a well-configured Wix site from outranking a badly configured custom build.

The controls people assume are missing are mostly present. Wix documents editing your site's robots.txt file directly, which covers the crawling-control case that hosted-builders-will-not-let-you is usually aimed at. Worth knowing what that file does and does not do: per Google, it governs crawling, not indexing.

What is actually limited

Three real constraints, none of them a penalty.

The performance ceiling. You do not own the server, the cache layer or the image pipeline. Clearing Google's good thresholds — LCP 2.5s, INP 200ms, CLS 0.1 at the 75th percentile — is achievable. Getting well under them on a mid-range phone is where the envelope starts to bind.

Template-generated URL duplication. Builders emit archive and variant routes that serve the same content at several addresses; the fix is canonicals.

Structural change is bounded. You can edit the page; you cannot rebuild how pages are generated. For a twenty-five-page service site with a real information architecture, that is the constraint that eventually decides a move.

So the useful question is not whether Wix is bad. It is whether your site's problem lives in the layer Wix controls or the layer you do.
