Citations in 2026: which still matter and which don't
What are citations and do they still matter?
A citation is any listing of your name, address and phone number on another site. They still matter, and Google says why in one word: prominence. Its local ranking documentation states prominence is based in part on information it has about a business from across the web. The directory-count packages sold on that basis are a different claim.

Which ones matter
Google's local ranking documentation names relevance, distance and prominence, and locates citations inside the third. That gives a priority order the packages do not.
The Business Profile itself, complete and consistent — the one listing that is not a citation but governs how all of them are read. The major platforms your buyers actually use, which is a handful. Trade and licensing bodies you genuinely belong to, which are the ones a competitor cannot buy. And local organizations — chamber, supplier directories, the sponsorship page of a league you actually sponsor.
Consistency beats volume, and it is the part that is checkable. One format for the name, one for the address, one for the phone. We hold ourselves to the same rule and state it: the E.164 form for machines, the readable form for people, never mixed in one place.

Which ones don't
Volume packages: 300 citations is a count of submissions, not of listings anyone reads. Listings on sites with no local audience: a directory nobody visits is a record, not a signal. Anything that requires a different NAP to accept you, because an inconsistent citation is worse than no citation — the inconsistency is the thing that propagates. And lead-generation directories that compete with you, where you would be paying to appear beside three competitors on a page that outranks your own.
And the maintenance problem is real. Listings drift. A listing that was right in September is not guaranteed right in March, which is why this is a recurring line item rather than a one-time purchase.
Dated heading, deliberately. This page says in 2026 because the answer has a shelf life, and it is scheduled for re-inspection rather than left to age quietly.
